Case Study: toddler’s feeding plateau
BackgroundA 15‑month‑old toddler came to us after six months of plateaued feeding skills despite weekly feeding therapy. The family worried the child was struggling to gain weight and it felt like a full time job counting calories and making sure she drank enough milk and formula to fill in the gaps.
Our approach:
1. Nutrition assessment & intake review
Our dietitian carefully evaluated the toddler’s current eating patterns. While the child was eating regularly, much of the intake came from a narrow range of preferred foods and only a few bites at a time. Protein, healthy fats, and other nutrient-dense solids were minimal.
2. Collaborative planning with feeding therapy
Working together, our RDN and feeding therapist supported the toddler in exploring new textures and flavors. We focused on gentle, playful exposure to high-calorie, nutrient-rich options such as banana, nut or seed butters, whole milk yogurt, and toast strips with a variety of spreads.
3. Parent coaching & mealtime strategies
Parents learned to offer small portions repeatedly without pressure, honor the toddler’s hunger and fullness cues, and create predictable mealtime routines. Over time, formula was replaced with milk, and milk volume was reduced to encourage solid-food intake. Within two months, the toddler’s variety and intake increased to age-appropriate levels, supporting graduation from feeding therapy.
4. Growth monitoring & ongoing adjustments
We monitored growth 1-2 times/month. During the eight-week period, weight percentiles dipped slightly, an expected adjustment as formula was weaned and solid foods increased. The dietitian continues to provide monthly or bi-monthly follow-ups to ensure steady growth and support ongoing nutrition needs.
